Just a little reminder

The current biennial period ends December 31, 2008.  According to our bylaws, each registered person “...must submit proof to the Registration Board that they have completed at least 30 contact hours of continuing education each biennial period.”  That’s only six-months away.

The most recent RS Roster was posted to the FEHA website earlier this week.  Of the 180 persons registered, nearly 25% have submitted all their hours, another 25% have submitted some of their hours and the remainder have not submitted any hours this biennial period.

Please check the RS Roster to ensure that the number of hours you submitted are actually posted.  I’m not exactly sure what happened, but some or all of the forms submitted at the AEM last year never made it to me for posting.  If you submitted hours at last year’s AEM and they’re not posted, please resubmit them directly to me.

Also, don’t forget to complete the CEU form with each submittal.  I maintain a folder for each of you and every time I receive hours, I review the form(s) and attachments(s), staple the documents together and write the number of hours awarded and the date the hours were entered in the database on the form before filing.  If you send hours or certificates to me without the form (e.g., via email), I have to complete one for you.

Finally, the current biennial period ends December 31, 2008.  Attending this year’s AEM will earn you nearly half the required hours.  See you there!

This credential reflects the highest level of expertise and competence in the environmental health profession.  Registration is voluntary in Florida, so those awarded the credential demonstrate a high degree of personal initiative and a long-term commitment to public health.  They’re more likely to be up-to-date on the latest advancements in their field and are better equipped to direct the activities of others.  Registration enhances credibility in communicating risks, serving as an expert witness or in discussions with other professionals about environmental health issues.

The standards for registration in Florida meet the requirements of the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and have been adopted by FEHA.  Florida maintains a reciprocity agreement with NEHA so once you receive your Florida credential; you can apply for the NEHA credential.  Because of our agreement with NEHA, any other state with a similar agreement will recognize the Florida credential.

To be eligible for registration, applicants must meet the education and experience requirements established in our by-laws then successfully pass a national exam covering all aspects of environmental health, including bioterrorism and disaster preparedness.  Once registered, individuals must complete and submit continuing education units to the Registration Board and adhere to a professional code of ethics.  They’re also active in professional and community-based activities.

As organizations strive for a more talented workforce, registration provides an incentive for employees to increase their job-related value by developing and maintaining new skills.  Employers and customers benefit from the enhanced quality of services that registration can impart.  This is especially true during difficult times, like natural disasters or budget reductions.

Registration is an accomplishment that will generate a sense of pride on a personal level while attracting recognition from your peers on a professional level.

So...what are you waiting for?
